The resource, titled HIPAA for IT Providers: The most important rules to know, is a free report that simplifies the most relevant aspects of HIPAA that managed service providers (MSPs), value-added resellers (VARs), and other IT service providers must follow in healthcare.

HIPAA is an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Originally passed by Congress in 1996, the act was later expanded and amended to include a broad set of regulations for healthcare organizations. Many of the regulations apply to the security of protected health information, called “PHI”.
IT service providers who handle patient data for healthcare clients are considered “business associates” by HIPAA”s guidelines. The designation requires them to secure data within the guidelines or risk steep penalties, among other requirements.
