CALYPTIX SECURITY PROTECTS CUSTOMERS FROM "Worm_Nuwar.CQ" AHEAD OF LEADING ANTI-VIRUS VENDORS

CHARLOTTE, NC – January 29, 2007: Calyptix Security has successfully protected its customers from another new email propagated worm without reliance on static signatures. This worm was first identified as Worm_Nuwar.CQ by Trend Micro on January 21, 2007.

Calyptix Security's AccessEnforcer™ units first captured variants of the worm as early as January 21 at approximately 9:30 p.m. Trend Micro reported making its discovery of the worm on January 21 but did not specify a time. Meanwhile, Fortinet reported it discovered the worm on January 27.

Calyptix Security's customers were protected well before the first variant of the worm was discovered without any need for signature updates.

Calyptix Security utilizes DyVax™, the company's patent-pending signature-less inspection engine, exclusively packaged with the AccessEnforcer brand product line. Using the most recent version of its DyVax software, version 1.3, released on January 9, 2007, Calyptix Security's all-in-one security appliances were immediately able to identify and quarantine all variants of the virus so that no damage could be done to users' workstations or the larger networks.

Variants of the worm provide subject lines with "love" related messages and spoofs the "from" field with numerous names to entice recipients into opening the message to execute the attachment. The worm then compromises the host by installing itself onto the user's computer. The program terminates numerous desktop security processes for anti-virus and other security applications. Variants of the worm captured by Calyptix Security's customers have used numerous subjects including:

Trend Micro estimated over 45,000 computers were infected at one point after initial release of the worm into the wild. Aliases of this virus include Win32/Agent.NAF!tr (Fortinet), Win32/Luder.L (CA), Trojan.Peacomm (Symantec), Downloader-BAI.gen (McAfee), Mal/Hckpk-A (Sophos) and Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Lager.dp (Kaspersky).
